California Paycheck Calculator (2026)

California taxes paychecks more aggressively than any other state — nine brackets topping out at 13.3%. But the headline rate misleads: thanks to a $5,540 standard deduction (single, 2026) and graduated brackets, a typical earner pays far less than 13.3% on their income. Here's how the math actually works.

2026 California income tax brackets (single)

California's brackets below are the 2026 single-filer schedule used in our calculator (standard deduction $5,540 single / $11,080 married filing jointly; source: Tax Foundation, "2026 State Individual Income Tax Rates and Brackets," as of January 2026):

Taxable income over Rate
$0 1%
$11,079 2%
$26,264 4%
$41,452 6%
$57,542 8%
$72,724 9.3%
$371,479 10.3%
$445,771 11.3%
$742,953 12.3%
$1,000,000 13.3%

The rate applies only to income within each band — the classic marginal system. Someone earning $75,000 never touches the 9.3% bracket, let alone 13.3%.

Worked example: $75,000 salary, single filer, 2026

Federal first (2026: $16,100 standard deduction, single; brackets per IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32): taxable $58,900 → 10% × $12,400 = $1,240; 12% × $38,000 = $4,560; 22% × $8,500 = $1,870 → federal income tax $7,670.

FICA: Social Security 6.2% × $75,000 = $4,650; Medicare 1.45% × $75,000 = $1,087.50 → $5,737.50 (under the 2026 $184,500 Social Security wage base).

California: $75,000 − $5,540 standard deduction = $69,460 taxable:

Bracket Calculation Tax
1% to $11,079 $11,079 × 1% $110.79
2% to $26,264 $15,185 × 2% $303.70
4% to $41,452 $15,188 × 4% $607.52
6% to $57,542 $16,090 × 6% $965.40
8% to $69,460 $11,918 × 8% $953.44
California tax $2,940.85 → $2,941
Amount
Gross pay $75,000
Federal income tax −$7,670
FICA −$5,738
California income tax −$2,941
Take-home $58,651

Excludes California State Disability Insurance, a separate payroll deduction whose rate EDD sets each year — it appears as its own line on your pay stub.

Effective California rate on this paycheck: about 3.9% — a long way from the 13.3% headline, which only bites income above $1 million.

Local taxes

California cities do not levy local wage income taxes — unlike New York City, there's no San Francisco or Los Angeles income-tax line on your pay stub. (San Francisco funds itself partly through employer payroll taxes, but those don't come out of your check.)

Final pay & PTO rules

If you're fired or laid off in California, your employer must pay everything you're owed immediately — on your last day, at the place you're let go. If you quit, the deadline is 72 hours after your last day — but if you gave at least 72 hours' notice, all wages are due on your final day. Employers who willfully miss these deadlines can owe a penalty of a full day's pay for every day you wait, up to 30 days. California also has a statewide paid sick leave law: most employees earn at least 40 hours (or five days) of paid sick leave per year, accruing at one hour per 30 hours worked, and can start using it after 90 days on the job.

FAQ

Why is California's top rate 13.3% but my effective rate so much lower? Because brackets are marginal and the standard deduction shields the first $5,540. The 13.3% rate only applies to taxable income above $1 million (plus a 1% surcharge already baked into that figure). Most earners never get near it.

Does California tax my bonus differently? For withholding, yes: California employers withhold a flat 10.23% on bonuses and stock options (6.6% on other supplemental wages like commissions and severance), per EDD publication DE 231PS. Your actual tax is still computed at the normal brackets when you file.

I work remotely for a California company but live elsewhere. Which state taxes me? Generally the state where you physically perform the work taxes the wages — but California is famously aggressive about sourcing rules for nonresidents. If this is your situation, the answer depends on specific facts; our W-2 vs 1099 guide covers worker classification, not residency — consider a tax pro for multi-state questions.

Is there really no local income tax in Los Angeles or San Francisco? Correct for wage earners — no city in California taxes employee wages the way NYC does. Your pay stub's California lines are state PIT and SDI only.

How does California compare to Texas for take-home pay? On $75,000 single: about $58,651 in California vs. $61,592 in Texas — the entire gap is California's $2,941 state tax. Run both in the take-home pay calculator.
