How the math works

Every estimate on this page follows the same three steps:

  1. Monthly gross range = gig's hourly band × your market multiplier × hours per week × 4.33 (weeks per month).
  2. Costs = platform fee (a % of gross, where the platform takes one) + vehicle expense for driving gigs (your miles × the IRS rate).
  3. Monthly net range = gross range − costs. Divide by monthly hours for the effective net hourly range.

The hourly bands are the honest part — each comes from a named 2026 source (table below). The market multipliers (1.15 / 1.0 / 0.85) are clearly labeled approximations. Nothing here includes income tax: gig income is 1099 income, and the 15.3% self-employment tax is yours to handle.

The 8 gig types and where the numbers come from

Gig Hourly band (driver/tutor keeps) Source
Rideshare driver (Uber/Lyft) $18–$25 Gridwise 2026 Annual Gig Mobility Report ($23.88/hr gross incl. tips, 500k+ drivers)
Food delivery (DoorDash/Uber Eats) $15–$25 GigWorkerMoney 2026 driver survey ($17–$25); Solo Analytics 2026 ($14.25–$15.15 engaged-hr avg)
Grocery/package delivery (Instacart/Amazon Flex) $16–$28 GigWorkerMoney 2026 (Instacart $16–$28; Amazon Flex $18–$35)
Freelance writing $30–$40 Upwork 2026 rate guide; minus 10% Upwork freelancer service fee
Freelance design $15–$35 Upwork 2026 rate guide; minus 10% Upwork freelancer service fee
Freelance web development $20–$90 Upwork 2026 ($10–$100); Contractrates.fyi 2026 via dev.to (most $40–$90); minus 10% fee
Online tutoring $25–$60 Wyzant platform average $35–$60/hr (TopConsumerReviews, Oct 2026); entry from ~$15/hr
Pet sitting / dog walking $14–$30 Wealthvieu 2026 citing Rover data ($18–$30 per 30-min walk; ~$14–$32/hr effective after Rover's 20% fee)

For driving gigs the band is what lands in the driver's pocket (platforms already took their cut); your car is the remaining cost. For freelance gigs the band is the billed rate, so the platform fee comes off. Tutoring is shown before platform fees — adjust the fee field for your platform.

Worked example: 20 hrs/week of rideshare

Maya drives 20 hours a week in a mid-size city and logs about 200 miles a week.

Step Math Result
Monthly hours 20 × 4.33 86.7 hrs
Monthly gross $18–$25 × 86.7 $1,560 – $2,167
Vehicle expense 200 mi × 4.33 × $0.76 $659
Monthly net $1,560–$2,167 − $659 $901 – $1,508
Effective net hourly $901–$1,508 ÷ 86.7 $10.40 – $17.40/hr

Notice the story the numbers tell: at the low end of the band, the car eats 42% of gross. Driving more miles for the same pay doesn't raise income — it raises costs. That's the single most misunderstood fact in gig driving.

What moves you within the range

  • When you work. Friday/Saturday nights, lunch rushes, rain, and game days pay surge and peak rates. Tuesday at 2pm does not.
  • Your market. Dense areas mean shorter deadhead miles and more orders per hour — but also more competing drivers.
  • Ratings and acceptance. High ratings unlock priority dispatch and better orders on most platforms; cherry-picking only the best offers raises your effective rate.
  • Multi-apping. The highest-earning delivery drivers run 2–3 apps at once and take whichever order pays best per mile (GigWorkerMoney 2026).
  • Your costs. A paid-off Prius and a financed SUV produce wildly different net numbers at the same gross. The mileage input is the most important field on this page for drivers.

What this calculator assumes — and doesn't

  • Monthly figures use 52 ÷ 12 = 4.33 weeks per month.
  • Vehicle expense uses the IRS standard mileage rate of 76¢/mile for July–December 2026 (IR-2026-29; it was 72.5¢ for January–June 2026). It approximates gas, insurance, depreciation, and maintenance in one number.
  • Platform fees default per gig (10% Upwork freelance, 20% already baked into the pet-sitting band, 0% where the band is already driver payout) — override the fee field if your platform differs.
  • Not included: income tax and self-employment tax, health insurance, unpaid waiting time, or startup costs (background checks, insulated bags, a better bike). Treat the net as "cash left after operating costs," not "money you keep."

Estimates only — not financial or tax advice. Actual gig earnings vary widely by market, hours, demand, and effort.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate are side hustle income estimates?

They're ranges, not promises. Gig pay swings with your city, the hours you work (Friday night beats Tuesday morning), your ratings, and how efficiently you work. This calculator shows a documented low–high band for each gig type so you can plan around the conservative end and hope for the top end — never budget on the maximum.

Why is the net so much lower than the gross for driving gigs?

Your car is a silent business partner that takes a cut of every mile. The IRS standard mileage rate for July–December 2026 is 76¢ per mile (IR-2026-29), which bundles gas, insurance, depreciation, and maintenance. A rideshare driver doing 200 miles a week burns about $659 a month in vehicle costs — that's real money even though no bill arrives for it.

Do I owe taxes on side hustle income?

Yes. Gig platforms generally report your earnings on a 1099 form, and you're responsible for both income tax and the 15.3% self-employment tax (Social Security + Medicare). Nothing on this page includes income tax — the 'net' here means after vehicle and platform costs only. Run the result through our W-2 vs 1099 calculator to see the tax side.

Which side hustle pays the most per hour?

Skilled freelance work tops the list: freelance web development ($20–$90/hr) and writing ($30–$40/hr) per Upwork's 2026 rate data. But those ranges reward experience and client-winning skills — a beginner won't land the top end on day one. Driving and delivery gigs pay less per hour ($14–$28) but you can start earning this weekend with no portfolio.

How does my city size change the estimate?

Bigger markets usually mean more demand and higher prices: the calculator applies a 1.15× multiplier for major metros, 1.0× for mid-size cities, and 0.85× for small towns. These are rough approximations, not researched figures — a college town with huge delivery demand can easily beat a sleepy metro suburb.

Should I count waiting time and unpaid miles?

You should, and that's exactly why ranges beat single numbers. Published hourly figures are usually 'engaged' rates — they undercount the minutes waiting for orders and the deadhead miles driving back empty. If your real-world number lands near the low end of the band, that's normal, not failure.

Estimates only, not tax or financial advice. Figures reflect the 2026 tax year. Verify important decisions with the IRS or a qualified tax professional.
